If “Plan A” Don’t Work…
I had a totally different column ready to go for today, but I really felt God leading me in a different direction. There comes a time in every person’s life when we need to decide if we are going to totally trust God with everything. We have to choose to put aside all our own ambitions and all our own desires to follow God completely.
I was listening to a message about following God’s will this morning. The preacher was talking about doing what God says to do even if you might fail. We might not always achieve the success that we thought we would. We could do everything right, have all the best plans, put our heart and soul into it and see nothing come out of it. That’s hard. We put all our trust in God only to see our dreams end up as failures.
I like what the preacher was saying, though. It’s not up to us for the outcome. We can only be the vessels that God uses. We might not always see the tangible results, but the eternal results are what really matter. God is so much bigger than us and He can use what we deem as a failure to bring glory to His Name.
I had a friend who was a gifted rapper. He was a great lyricist and a great minister and I loved every song he was on. He was more focused on his rap career than on his ministry, though. He said to me one time that he was going to put everything into the new CD he was working on. If his “career” didn’t take off he was going to give it up completely. There was No Plan B for him. He ended up never finishing that CD and abandoned God, his family and his ministry in the process. I’m still praying that one day he’ll come back to God, not for his awesome rap music, but because I love him and I know that God has called him to more than just that.
I used to think that “No Plan B” was a great saying. Stick to it. Don’t give up. Pursue your dreams no matter the cost. But what happens when your plans fail? Are you still going to trust that God has things under control? Will you walk away defeated from your call? Or will you trust that God might just have something better for you?
I’ve known pastors who have started churches, knowing in their hearts that God called them, but due to finances or personal reasons the church goes under. I’ve known athletes that put all their time and energy into their sport only to come up short from making the big leagues. I’ve seen many great men of God pursue a “God-given task” only in the end to see it end up in ruin. But time and time again, I’ve seen those same mighty men of God rebound and go in a completely different direction and God use them ten times greater than He would have if they had stayed where they were.
Do we settle for less? Of course not. We strive for everything God has for us. But when we do fail, we have to learn that there is something better that God has in store for us. Sometimes God will allow us to experience disappointments in order for us to grow through the process. He’ll let us learn from our mistakes so that the next opportunity that arises, we’ll know how to handle the situation from His perspective instead of ours.
God has a plan and a purpose for your life. Don’t ever give up on God’s call in your life. We will all experience failure at some point, but the important thing to remember is that God is always in control. If “Plan A” don’t work, God always has a “Plan B” or a “Plan C” that is even better for you.
