What Would You Do?
My wife and I were watching the show “What Would You Do?” on ABC the other night. I made the comment, “You have to be careful what you say and do everywhere you go nowadays because you never know if they are taping for a reality show of some kind.” She replied back saying that we should be careful what we say and do all the time because God is always watching.
That struck a nerve. I’m a pretty patient and nice guy most of the time…except sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic or on the phone with Customer Service, ha. I’m not too proud of the fact that I told off the Comcast guy the other day. That’s one of those areas that God is still working on in me.
Watching that show really made me think, though. How would I have responded if I was in some of those situations? Would I have shown Jesus’ love when a waiter confronts a lesbian couple and asks them to leave? Or would I have agreed with the waiter and been glad to get rid of them? Would I have stood up for a mentally retarded person getting made fun of in a grocery store, or would I have just walked away?
Many times we can be the opposite of what Jesus would have us to be. Our sinful nature and our flesh can easily get the best of us. We can blow up so easily at the stupidest things. We’re not always going to respond to every situation in the correct way, but I believe we can make an effort to.
As Christians, I believe we should always be cautious of what we say and do. It’s not to prove that we are holier than everyone else, but it’s so people can see the Christ within us. People want to be loved and accepted. I think that’s why the multitudes flocked towards Jesus. He treated people the way they needed to be treated.
It’s kind of funny because today at lunch one of those situations came up. There was a man pushing his baby in a stroller and his other little son was walking next to him. He had come to a flight of stairs and was going to turn around because he couldn’t make it up. I started to pass him when I thought, I should ask him if he needs some help, which I did. I grabbed the other end of the stroller and we carried the baby up the stairs. He said thank you and we both moved on our separate ways.
Now that’s not deserving of a hero’s parade or nothing like that. (My wife is the one who deserves a hero’s parade because she dove into a pool and saved a drowning kid’s life this past week…but that’s another story, ha.) I just think we should all have our eyes open to help others. What ever happened to common courtesy? If every Christian would really show Christ’s love to the people they come into contact with each day, I believe more people would come to Christ.
There’s a song that says, “If we are the Body, why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the Body, why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way.”
While watching that TV show, I think most everyone would agree what the right thing to do is. The thing is, in real life only a handful of people really did the right thing. We may go to church and read our Bible. We may claim to be good Christians, but how many times do we do the wrong things in situations that present themselves? There is a difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it.
That’s my challenge to you this week. Don’t only think about the question, “What Would You Do?” Actually go out and do it. Share Christ’s love with someone. Help an old lady across the street. Stand up for someone being picked on. Pray for someone that needs healing. Rescue a koala bear from a burning forest. Whatever it is, let’s all go out and show Christ’s love to this dying world.
