Are You a Fountain or a Drain?
Have you ever been around a person that drains you of your joy? That person can be negative, always talking bad about other people and deep down probably unhappy with themselves. They cover their flaws by pointing out the flaws in others. Everything’s about “poor me” and how life is so hard.
Have you ever been around a person that brightens up a room? You start talking to them and all of a sudden your spirits are lifted. They compliment you and talk about the wonderful things God is doing in their lives. Their focus is not on their problems, but in shining God’s light.
While I was driving the other day I passed by a church with a sign that said, “Are you a fountain or a drain?” I thought it was an interesting question so I’m going to talk about that today. A fountain is powered by a jet stream that pushes water outward. A drain is a hole that draws water in.
“Spring up the well, within my soul, spring up the well, and make it whole, spring up the well and grant to me, that life abundantly”
We used to sing that song in church when I was younger. I love how the idea of a spring or a fountain represents life abundantly. That flow of water is alive with action and movement. That flow has a purpose and a meaning. It’s going somewhere. It’s doing something.
I always liked how the Bible calls us vessels. There are some vessels of honor and others of disgrace. A vessel is only good if it is in constant use. It needs to be filled, poured out, washed and filled again. If water is left in there over a period of time it gets stale and moldy. But if water continues to flow through it, needs are being met and thirsts are getting quenched.
A drain is stagnate. It doesn’t move. It’s only purpose is to sit there and wait for water to come to it. Too many times I think Christians can be like this. Instead of putting to action the Word of God, we do nothing and expect God to move anyway. We sit in the pew every Sunday, but never take what we learn and apply it to our everyday lives.
Are you a fountain or a drain? If you’re not speaking life into those around you, you’re probably a drain. If you’re always taking in and never pouring out, you’re probably a drain. If you’re always miserable and depressed, you’re probably a drain. (If you’re my brother and you spelled your name wrong, you’re probably Adrain, ha sorry had to go there.)
God has called us to be fountains. We are supposed to be the light unto the world, the salt unto the earth, the city on a hill, the likeness of Christ to others. We should be pouring out God’s love to this dying world. We should be reaching the lost for Jesus. We should be sharing our testimony with all those around us.
At my church there is a beautiful fountain with a big white cross in the middle. I like the idea of the cross being in the center of our lives. A fountain needs a jet stream to keep the water flowing, just like in our lives we need Jesus to keep us flowing. Let’ be that fountain that Christ has called us to be!!!
