DAD

Another day. Another chance to Put Him First in our lives. I want to thank every one of you who tune in each week and listen to me babble on about whatever seems to come to mind. Thank you for your encouraging words and for keeping this site up and running. Without an audience, I’d be just writing to myself, which I do a lot of the times anyway, but it’s better to have people to share my life with. We are looking forward to improving this site here in the near future. Gabe doesn’t know it yet, but when he moves to Houston I’m going to put him to work. Hit us up if you have any input or ideas.

For those of you that don’t know, or who forgot, well here’s your reminder: Father’s Day is coming up this weekend. I had started working on this column a few days ago and didn’t know if I was going to use it for this week or next week, but I decided upon this week because if I used it next week it would be 2 days after Father’s Day when my dad read it. So instead of being late, I wanted to write it early, and plus, it gives all of you a heads up on remembering that special day.

I am truly blessed to have a father like my dad. I know in today’s society there are a lot of people that grow up without their dad or a father figure in their life. I thank God everyday for keeping my parents together to raise me and my siblings. With Father’s Day coming up, I wanted to share a little bit about my Dad and what he means to me.

My dad has always been there for me. Whenever I needed anything he provided. Whenever I messed up, he was there to correct me and give me advice. Growing up my dad always encouraged me and believed in me even when no one else seemed to. He was there to make sure I was alright when I drove my car off a cliff (long story) or when he had to drive 4 hours to pick me up because I “ran out of gas” (inside joke) and countless other times.

I can remember being so down on myself my senior year in High School because things didn’t go like I had thought they would. It was supposed to be my year to shine in basketball, but I ended up sitting the bench. I can remember coming home so disappointed after games and just going straight to my room and going to bed. What I remember most though is that my dad would always come in afterwards and tell me that he loved me and that he was proud of me. He’d kiss me on my cheek and say a prayer and it always made me feel better. He’s one of the main reasons I never gave up.

My dad has always been my inspiration in life. I can still remember when my dad used to lead worship at The Christian Center in Raton, NM, my first church. I have an old tape of some of those songs that I listen to every once in awhile. I can still feel the anointing upon those songs he used to sing. I believe that his example is why I am a worshiper today. There is one time in particular that really stands out in my life. I don’t remember how old I was, but I know I was young. One day my dad took me with him to a band practice of his at the church. I remember sitting in that old pew in the front row watching them practice and something stirred up within me. It was from that day on that I fell in love with music. God was putting something in my heart that would come out years later.

For those of you out there who may have lost your father or never had a father around, I know that Father’s Day can be a sad day for you. I couldn’t imagine growing up without my dad, although I do understand how hard it could be. There was a time in my life where my dad had to move away for awhile. He had lost his job because the mines closed and he had to move to Albuquerque to find work which is about three and half hours away. It was really one of the hardest times for my family. I remember praying and asking God to make a way for my dad to come back home. It was so hard to be away from him for that short time, but God always works things out. He made a way for my dad to get his job back. During those times I remember we’d drive halfway to meet my dad every other week or so, and those times together were some of my fondest memories.

I believe that God gives us fathers as an example of His love for us, but those without a father, let me tell you about my Heavenly Father. He’s a Father that will never leave you nor forsake you. He will always be by your side. He loves you with all his heart and only wants the best for His sons and daughters. He is always there for you and His love never fails. Maybe this Father’s Day you don’t have a real dad. God still loves you with all of His heart and He wants to be that Father to you. Let Him into your heart and He will mend all of your broken wounds.

In closing I just wanted to say, I love you dad. Happy Father’s Day!!!!!
