Christ Mas

Well, it’s Christmas time again. Weeeeeeeee. I’m getting into the Christmas spirit. We just put up Christmas decorations at my apartment the other day, and what can I say, it’s an awesome display!!!! We have so many red lights that when you walk past our apartment on the outside, all you see is a red glare through the windows. I put up a big blue cross on one of the walls, and my sister put up a Chinese fighting star on the other (don’t ask me why). And everyone’s getting tired of listening to my Jaci Velasquez Christmas album by now. So, if you get a chance, come on by and check out our decorations. All you have to do is follow the red glare.

I love Christmas. It’s a time for families to get together and celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. I’ve heard the story a million times, but every time I hear it, it excites me. My Savior, my Lord, being born in a manger on that Christmas day over 2,000 years ago.

Imagine the excitement in the air. The shepherds out in the fields, going about their business, and suddenly an angel appears and tells them about the birth of the Savior. The wise men traveling with great anticipation following the star towards Jesus. Mary and Joseph holding their newborn baby that is to become the Messiah that scripture promised. King Herod freaking out about a new king being born.

Sometimes we forget what Christmas is all about. Christmas goes much deeper than just gifts and lights and trees and shopping and parties. Sometimes we get so caught up in everything else that we look past the manger scene. It becomes just another decoration set up with the stockings and the candy canes. I know we don’t mean too, but we end up paying more attention to Santa than we do Jesus.

At this website we stress to “Put Him First” throughout the year, but if there’s one time of the year we need to “Put Him First” the most, it’s during this season. I titled this column “Christ Mas” because I believe we need to put more of Christ in Christmas. (For those non-Spanish speaking readers, “mas” means “more” in English). That’s one thing I want this Christmas, more of Christ.

Along with all the good things and fun times, there always seems to be some sadness in the Christmas season. Looking back, 2004 was really a hard year for my family. My uncle passed away in June this year and the first Christmas without someone you really love is always hard. Last Christmas I had a cousin pass away, so times like these always bring back memories, both good and bad. In those times when we start feeling sad, we need to turn our eyes upon Christ and let Him be our comforter.

This Christmas season, before you start worrying and stressing about everything that comes with the busyness of this season, remember to “Put Him First”. After all, to quote a cliché, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” I’ll leave you with a poem I wrote in high school. God Bless.

little Baby born

little Baby born
little did they know
that the swaddling clothes He wore
were not fitting to His glory
no crying, just rejoicing
the star led them there
and they worshipped and gave gifts
yet they did not know why
a King He looked not
He came into this world humbly as a Babe
one day He shall reign
little Baby born
little did they know
that this Child would someday be exalted
far above any name

FELIZ NAVIDAD!!!!!
