More Like Him

Are you tired of Christmas music yet? I am. It’s not that I hate Christmas music or anything. It’s just that it gets way overplayed. Really now, how many different versions and remixes need to be made of “Jingle Bells”? It’s like that new song on the radio that you hear and you like, but then start to hate because everywhere you go, there it is. Alright, other than these Jingle Bells ringing through my head, things have been going good, though. God is continually challenging me to be “More Like Him.” I was joking with my brother and sister that as Christians we are supposed to try and be more like Jesus and that is why I started growing my hair out. So if you see me walking around in sandals and wearing a tunic, you know what’s really going on.

We are to imitate Christ in all we do. That should be our goal and objective as Christians. Our lifestyles should reflect that of Christ. The perfect example is laid out right before our eyes in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Everywhere we go people should see Jesus in us.

Matthew 5:14-16 says, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Do people know that you are a Christian? My Pastor always gives this example. If they started arresting people because they were Christians, would the Judge have enough evidence to convict you?

The other day when I got to work one of my supervisors came up to me and asked me what a certain scripture said. It caught me off guard. I’m not the best at memorizing scriptures, so I pulled out my Bible and looked it up for him. I can’t remember now exactly which scripture it was, but there was an advertisement for a church that didn’t quite sound right, so he wanted to make sure before sending the ad out for print. I thought it kind of funny that he would wait for me to come in to ask me. Come on now, we live in the 21st Century. He could have googled it and found out himself.

Do people know that you are a Christian at work? At school? I can say yes. Can you? I’m not always the most outspoken person. I don’t try and shove my beliefs on other people, but people do know that I am a Christian. I always loved that quote, “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words” (St. Francis of Assisi).

Are you being that light He’s called you to be? Do people see Jesus through you? Are you really representing Christ everywhere you go? I have to ask myself these questions over and over again. To be a Christian is to be Christ-like. We are different. We are not of this world. We should stand out and not fit in with the crowd.

I just wanted to encourage you all this week to continue to strive to be Christ-like. Now you don’t have to wear sandals, walk through deserts and grow out your hair and beard (especially the ladies on the beard thing), but it should be all of our desires to be “More Like Him” in our walk with God. May God Bless You and remember to keep on singing those Christmas Tunes.
