Open & Broken
We’ll never get to that place where God wants us to be until we are “Open” to His will and “Broken” before Him. We had an Evangelist at our church this weekend and he said someone needed to hear these two words, “Open and Broken.” I guess that someone was me because I’m writing about them this week. When I heard those two words, a song I wrote called “Spirit and Truth” came to mind.
“Spirit and Truth
i stand here broken at this altar again with a heart that’s open trying to make amends for over time my worship’s been tainted and deep inside i’ve become everything i once hated
don’t let these be just words that i sing Lord let me bring a pure offering let me worship You in Spirit and in Truth in all that i do let this be about You
let this be about You let this be about You”
We’ll never be able to worship God in Spirit and Truth if we don’t open our hearts to Him. We need to stand before God with everything out there. Why do we try and hide things from Him? I never understood that. He knows everything about us anyways. You can’t run from Him and you can’t hide from Him. You can’t pull a fast one on God. He’s got quicker eyes than you do.
Also, we’ll never be able to enter the Holy of Holies unless we are first broken before Him. Have you ever broken a jar or a glass and tried to super glue it back together? Maybe it was your Mom’s favorite coffee mug. No matter how much super glue you put on there and how hard you tried to fix it up, you never quite made it look like new again, and guess what? Mom always seemed to find out that you were the one that broke it too.
We spend so much time trying to fix up and super glue together our own lives, and we think that God isn’t going to notice the cracks in our foundation. The fact is, He can see right through us. That’s why we need to come before Him broken. The Bible refers to God as “The Potter”. He is able to take our messed lives, melt us down to clay and mold us and shape us into a brand new person that even Mom wouldn’t recognize.
I love reading about the life of David in the Bible. He was a true worshiper. He knew how to get ahold of God. The Bible refers to him as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). Even when He messed up He always ran back to God with an open heart and presented himself broken before Him.
We see David crying out to God for repentance after committing adultery and murder in Psalm 51:10-12, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Have you been at that altar lately? And I’m not talking about the front of the church. I’m talking about that place where you’re alone with God. That place known as “the secret place” or your “prayer closet”. That place where He’s able to mend your hurts. That place where He’s able to give you direction. That place where you can really grab ahold of what God wants to do in your life. That place where all things are made whole again.
I don’t know about you but I want my life to be a pure offering unto God. I want to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. I want to “Put Him First” in everything I do. “Open” up to Him today. Be “Broken” before Him. And He will bring that breakthrough that you need in your life. w/muchluv, geno
