Long Hair Like Jesus
Happy 4th of July to all of you! It’s a day late, but the column doesn’t come out till Wednesday, so you’re just going to have to deal with my tardiness. I pray you all had a safe and great holiday weekend.
I’m excited about what God’s doing in my life. I am truly grateful for all that He has done. I’ve gone from glory to glory to glory, not because of anything I’ve done or any great idea I’ve come up with, but only through the grace of God. The Bible says that if you’re faithful over the little, He will put you over much (Matthew 25:21). I’m a living example that this is true. Not saying I have much, but the little I do have is much in the hands of an Awesome God. I am living proof of God’s blessings. I’m living proof that He can take someone small and insignificant and use them to do great things for His honor and His glory.
How do you get to the place where you’re walking in God’s will? Through praying and reading and fasting of course. In so doing, we need to look at examples from the Word of God and follow their lead. I’ve always tried to model my life after people in the Bible. I’m a dreamer like Joseph. I’m a worshiper like David. I’m a man of faith like Abraham (and my brother Gabraham). I’m a writer like Paul. And I have long hair like Jesus, jk. Well, I do have long hair like Him, but I try to model my entire life after Him. He is the ultimate example of what our lives as Christians should be like. His life here on earth is the blueprint that we should try to follow.
Being in God’s will isn’t doing GREAT and MIGHTY works for Him. God isn’t asking you to win a million souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. He’s not asking you to turn water into wine or to feed the multitudes with a couple of fish and a few slices of bread. He’s not asking you to heal every person that needs a healing. These things might come to pass, for the Bible says that we will do greater things than even He did (John 14:12). But what God asks of us is not that we perform great miracles, but that we do the little things He calls us to do.
He’s asking you to do the things that may seem insignificant at the time. It’s the simple things like go give this person a hug, or take that person out to lunch, or spend an extra half an hour in your prayer closet. God doesn’t look at the size of the task you do. He looks at your obedience. If you are faithful where you are at, God will entrust you with much more.
How can God trust you to be a Pastor of a church if you can’t even be a good father to your children and a loving husband to your wife? How can God trust you to teach a class on the Bible, if you never spend time reading your Word? How can God trust you to lead worship if you don’t practice and you don’t cultivate that Spirit of worship in your own personal life? How can God use you to heal someone who is ailing if you don’t believe that God can heal yourself first?
I have a long way to go. God’s constantly challenging me and working in me. I try to listen for His voice. I try to be obedient to His call. I try to follow His will. It’s hard sometimes, because life seems to get in the way a lot of the time, but that’s when we need to pay more attention to Him. That’s when we need to seek Him even more for direction and trust in Him that He is in control of all things. That’s when we need to be obedient to Him.
I do believe that God has called us to do a great work. The work itself isn’t the main thing though. It’s that we “Put Him First” and listen to and obey the call that God has placed in each and every one of our lives. If you look at the life of Jesus in the New Testament, in everything Jesus did, He first went to the Father for direction. We need to do the same and model our lives after Him. So, let’s all grow out our hair to be more like Jesus. Just kidding, I’m not trying to start a cult or anything, but in every other area we do need to strive to be more like Him. God Bless.
