Made Time for God Today?

It’s been quite a week. I’ve been feeling a little sick, a little tired and a little surprised at certain circumstances. I feel like God’s trying to get my attention. I can get so busy at times that I forget to make time for Him. It’s so easy to neglect your prayer life or your Bible reading. It’s so easy to say, “God can wait till later.” It’s sad. Of course we never say that out loud or we sugarcoat it so it doesn’t sound so bad, but deep down that’s what we’re really saying.

My brother Gabe was on the computer the other day working on some stuff and I was on my bed not really doing anything. I was going to put some music on or read a magazine, or do something unproductive, when I looked over and saw my guitar still in its case. I decided instead to take it out, tune it up and start playing.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I play my guitar all through the week. I have choir practice on Monday, band practice on Tuesday morning, Bible Study on Tuesday night, Friday night prayer service, Saturday morning band practice and two church services on Sunday, so I have the guitar in my hands quite a bit. But it seemed like forever since I just picked up my guitar and played on my own time.

I got kind of convicted on Sunday. A brother from the church came up to me after service and started telling me, “You must always be in God’s presence to be writing new songs. I can tell you know how to get into contact with God.”

We had done an old song of mine called “sweet presence” that night for service. We hadn’t sung that song in years, so it’s probably new to most people. Well, I do have a couple of new songs, but his words kind of challenged me. Not necessarily to write new songs, but to find myself in God’s presence again.

I hope this doesn’t come out wrong, but it’s kind of easy to get into God’s presence when you’re expected to. At church when everyone’s worshiping God, it’s just natural that you be worshiping too. Being a worship leader it is kind of required that I worship God. But in that time alone, when it’s just you, it just seems to be more difficult. You can come up with a million of excuses not to. I have to watch the game. I need to go shopping. I have to check my Myspace. The latest movie just came out. I need to call my friend, etc. etc.

Things tend to come up and we get too busy for Him, when all along what we really need to do is stop everything we’re doing and seek His face. We need to turn off the TV, turn off the computer, put our phones on silent, and get on our knees and seek Him.

That’s what I did this morning. I got home from work and before I sat down to write the column, before I went and ate breakfast, before I did anything else, I picked up my guitar and started worshiping Him. I said, “God, today I’m going to Put You First.” How can I write a column or do anything for Him without first going to Him? How can I tell you to “Put Him First” if I’m not living it?

I’ll leave you with a question this week. Have you made time for God today?
