Get Off to a Running Start

It’s been a little cold here in my neck of the woods the past few days. My little brother Josh was telling me I’ve become soft since I moved to Houston because I forgot what real cold was. He’s probably right. I grew up next to Colorado, so I remember what going through some real cold weather was like. I was laughing today because Houston pretty much shut down the whole city for a little bit of ice on the road. People across the country are digging their way out of snow, while here they cancel school and work for a little ice. Just thought that was a little funny, but anyways, I hope you all are reading this while you’re nice and snug and warm.

This past weekend we were able to get back in the studio to start working on a compilation we’re putting together featuring different artists we know and have worked with in the past. (You’ll be hearing more about it in the near future, I’m sure.) There’s something about being in the studio. It gets me fired up. It gets the creative juices flowing. Making music is what stirs my passion. It’s what drives me. It’s what gets me motivated. I was talking to a friend the other day who said, “I like it when you’re in the studio. You seem more alive and excited.”

I told my brother Gabe at the start of the year that we needed to get a jump on this project as soon as possible. I want to take advantage of every opportunity God puts in front of me this year. I don’t want to look back on 2007 and say, “shoulda, coulda, woulda.” I want to grab ahold of that vision God put in my heart and run with it.

My Pastor was preaching about vision this past weekend. He was saying that in order for us to see the vision and run with the vision, we need to be consistent with our prayer life. I’m finding that to be true. My brother and I have been setting aside time every morning to pray for quite awhile now. It’s truly amazing how just that little bit of time can totally change your life. I thank God for my bro. It does make it a whole lot easier to have someone to keep you accountable. I know God has put us together to do a great task, through this website and through the record label, and I know that every great thing starts in prayer.

There was a comic strip in the paper the other day and the funny lil guy was standing there next to an open door and the caption read, “Opportunity doesn’t even need to knock if you just leave your door open to it?”

By being in prayer and seeking God’s face we are keeping that door open. We are letting Him into our lives and are in constant communication with Him. When our hearts our open to God and we keep Him as our main focus, it’s then that He begins to reveal that vision to us. It’s then that He begins to show us which path to take. It’s then where we start seeing God’s plans unfold in our lives.

What has God called you to do? Have you started working on that calling? Have you started moving towards that goal? What’s keeping you from achieving it? Maybe you’re not quite sure what He’s called you to do. That’s fine, too. There was a time when I had no clue where I was supposed to be or what I was supposed to do. It’s during that time where you need to draw closer to Him. Ask Him to lead you and guide you. Ask Him to give you that passion to reach people through whatever gift He has given you. Mine happens to be through writing and music. I can honestly say that I am moving in those gifts. Whatever God has called you to do, do it with all of your heart.

He’s called some to be teachers, preachers, evangelists, apostles, prophets, etc. (Ephesians 4:11). He’s called some to be pillars, some to go into the workplace, some to be missionaries. Whatever God has called you to do, be that light in the middle of darkness (Matthew 5:13). Be that salt to the flavorless (Matthew 5:14). Be that cheerful person in the midst of grumps (Gabe, ha jk). Be that joy in the midst of suffering. Be life to a dying world.

It’s never too late to get moving on that calling. The first couple weeks of 2007 have passed us by, but God still wants to move in your life. No matter how this year has started for you, there’s still time to turn it around. There’s still time to “Get Off to a Running Start.”

1 Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.”
