Kay-O

Life has a way of suddenly making no sense to you. Just when things seem to be going really good, life throws you a curve and you have to sort of just swing at it and hope you make contact. I lost a good friend this past Sunday, Kylan Jamar (Kay-O) Wilson. He died in a freak accident and it hit me kind of hard. I can’t imagine what his family is going through right now. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. I didn’t know Kay-O real well, but the few times I got to spend with him were always fun. He was a talented musician and I am blessed to have been able to write a song with him before he died (“You Love Me” by Siobhan from The PHF Compilation.)

When something like this happens, it makes the little problems you have in your own life seem so insignificant. Kay-O just turned 18 and had a bright future in front of him. I just saw him at the Victory Outreach World Conference in California and he looked happy and full of life. I often ask God why He would let something like this happen. We may not understand why God does, but we can know that He is in complete control of every situation. I know Kay-O is up in Heaven worshiping Jesus right now.

Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”

I wanted to start this column off today just in remembrance of a good friend of mine. Kay-O, you will truly be missed. My love and prayers go out to Pastor Charles and Lena, Keyana, all the family, VO Albuquerque and his many friends and loved ones in this time of grieving.

I was having a hard time transitioning to what I wanted to write on this week, so I’m just going to speak from the heart. I don’t always understand God’s ways, and many times we’re not supposed to. The Bible in Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

I always have a hard time finding the right words to comfort people during times of loss like this. I know that the best thing I can do is pray. I’m far from the situation (Kay-O was from Albuquerque) but I know that prayer knows no distance. I feel like I’m stumbling over my words today, but my heart goes out to everyone affected by this loss.

Isaiah 57:1-2 says, “The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.”

We don’t always understand why. We don’t always grasp how God could let this happen. I just know that God has a reason for everything. Sometimes it’s to draw us closer together. Sometimes it’s to get our focus back on Christ. It’s still never easy dealing with death. Even in the Bible we see that Jesus wept over the loss of His friend Lazarus (John 11:35).

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

I’m not going to draw this column out today. I know most of us have experienced the loss of a loved one at one point in our lives. It is never easy. Whatever you’re feeling right now, just know that God has sent His Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to be with you. God loves you so very much and He will always be there for you.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
