Launch Out Into The Deep

“When (Jesus) had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.” (Luke 5:4-6)

Why do we question God sometimes? Why do we complain and try to get out of what He asks us to do? Too many times in our Christian walk, instead of trusting God to do that work in us, we start complaining and moaning and groaning and we miss out on His blessings because we can’t see beyond our own predicament. We can only see what’s in front of us right now instead of what God has for us in the future. We tend to look at our inabilities, when we should put our trust in His ability.

We’re all familiar with the story of Moses. God called him to deliver the children of Israel from the Egyptians. We remember the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea and the “let my people go”. Right before Moses went to Egypt though, he had an encounter with God. Moses tried to get out of going back to Egypt He made excuses and told God in Exodus 4:10, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

God called Gideon a “mighty man of valor”. He was a brave soldier and warrior and won many battles for Israel. But when God first called Gideon and told him that he would deliver Israel from the hand of the Midianites, Gideon responded in Judges 6:15, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

In our scripture, Jesus tells Simon Peter to “Launch Out Into The Deep” and Peter starts off complaining, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing.” He could have continued on and said that this was ridiculous. Peter was a skilled fisherman and knew that there were no more fish to be caught that night. He could have said, “Listen Jesus, I know what I’m doing, we tried all night, we’re tired, hungry and just want to get home.”

If we can take anything from all these great men of God, it’s that even though they had their doubts, they ultimately trusted in God and had faith that He would do what He said He would do. Moses delivered Israel from Egypt. Gideon was able to free them from the hand of the Midianites. And Peter was able to see Jesus perform a miracle.

You can’t receive the blessing God has for you until you “Launch Out Into The Deep.” You can’t become the man or woman of God He wants you to be if you don’t trust that God is going to give you sound advice and lead you in the right direction. You can’t become that mighty warrior until you first realize it is God that makes you who you are.

We all have our doubts and we all complain at times, but we can’t let that stop us from doing what God’s called us to do. Your blessing is waiting for you if you would only believe. If you listen to what God tells you and follow Him in obedience, He will bless you so much that your nets will not be able to hold onto it, “good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over” (Luke 6:38). So “Launch Out Into The Deep” and watch God do a work in your life like never before.
