Work It Out

Ever felt like you were in a rut? Have you been in a place where you just can’t seem to get out of? You keep stumbling over the same things over and over again. I get to places like that in my life sometimes. It’s like I want to be doing something new and exciting, but I can’t get past what I’m doing right now to get to where I need to be.

What is life if there are no challenges? I’m the kind of person that needs something to work towards. I need something to motivate me and keep me busy. When I don’t have that something to reach after, I start getting complacent. I find myself wasting time, just living day to day, going about the same routine over and over again. I don’t believe that is God’s intention for our lives. As Christians we aren’t called to be ordinary. We serve a God that has so much more in store for us than just working, eating and sleeping.

Too many times we’re looking for the quick fix. We want God to just change us on the spot. Sometimes He does and we rejoice and thank Him for that, but other times we have to work at it. I don’t always have all the answers. I don’t always know how I’m going to get out of whatever particular situation I’m in, but I know that there is hope. There is hope because God is real. There is hope because God’s mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:23). There is hope because even when we are unfaithful, He is still faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). There is hope because God is the same yesterday, today and forever and His word will always be true (Hebrews 13:8).

The Bible says to “work out your salvation in fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). We cannot totally be free from those things that hold us back unless we work at putting them to rest. To be truly delivered we must put into practice those things that God commands us to do. Some things take time to overcome. Just because we ask God to help us, doesn’t mean we’ll wake up the next morning and the problem will be gone.

If you have problems with alcohol, stay away from those that drink. Don’t go to the bar. Don’t be looking through the wine list at a restaurant. If you have an anger problem, learn to walk away. Learn to pray for those that make you angry. It sounds simple, but when that temptation starts calling out to you, sometimes it’s hard to resist. We need to start recognizing those areas in our lives which need work on and take it to God.

Recognizing the problem isn’t enough though. We need to let Him work it out in us. The most important thing is that connection you have with God. We start drifting and going our own ways when we stop praying and we stop reading. We lose focus when we stop going to God to help us in our daily lives. Those problems and struggles overtake us when we start relying on our own strength instead of God to help us in our weaknesses.

I really don’t believe serving God is as hard as we make it on ourselves sometimes. Yes, there are things we need to do, but I believe it all comes back to what this website stands for, “Put Him First.” If we were to really just do that, everything else would fall into place. Sure we’re going to have struggles and trials and failures and faults, but God will help us through all of them. If we keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus, He is sure to lead us to where we need to be.

God will “Work It Out” in your life. Whatever it is you’re struggling with, just know that He loves you. You might not be able to see it right now, but He has already made a way out for you. Don’t give up on God for He hasn’t given up on you. He has a great plan for your life. He is going to do great things in you and through you. Just remember that there is always hope in Jesus.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
