Walking In Your Promise

And the winners are……
Once again by order of our web guru Gabe, you are going to have to read the column first before you can find out this week’s winners. All names will still self destruct if the column is not read in full. Not really, but I encourage you to read today’s column because I believe God has something for you today.

Last week I wrote about staying away from having a “Grasshopper Mentality”. When we think small and lose our trust in God, we’re not able to fulfill that plan which God has for our lives. When we let the “giants” in our lives dictate our moves instead of letting God lead our steps, we find ourselves wandering through the wilderness.

None of us want to become Christians without purpose. If you truly love God, you want to become all He’s called you to be. How do we get there? How do we conjure up enough faith to cross over into our Promise Land? It starts first with hearing the voice of God.

Joshua 1:1-4 says, “After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.”

Before Joshua was able to lead the people across the Jordan, he first had to hear from God himself. Joshua was Moses’ assistant so he had heard God’s promises to Moses. He believed that they would someday come true. Though he wandered through the wilderness, he knew someday they would get to the Promise Land. It wasn’t until after Moses had died until God spoke this to Joshua. This is when Joshua knew that it was time.

Sometimes we try to do things ahead of God’s timing. I think about Moses in Egypt. God told him he was going to be a deliverer of the children of Israel, so when he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite, he stepped in and killed the Egyptian. This wasn’t the right timing or the right way to go about delivering the people. Moses had to flee for his life. It wasn’t until later when he had that burning bush experience that he knew it was time to walk in that promise. (Exodus 2 & 3)

I’ve heard many people say, “I don’t know my calling” or “how am I supposed to know what God has for me to do?” If you are seeking God and serving Him and putting Him first in your life, YOU’LL KNOW. It’s in that time of prayer where He reveals that plan for your life. Sometimes it will be through a burning bush and other times just a small whisper in your ear. If your heartbeat is in tune with God’s, you’ll know.

Many times the thing that keeps us from walking in our promise is fear. It may be that we’re afraid of the giants in the land. We might be afraid we aren’t strong enough. We aren’t smart enough. We aren’t wealthy enough. I always liked the saying that goes, “Where God leads, God provides.” God understands our fears. He understands the risk involved. Sometimes the mountains look too big to climb because they should be. God wants us to put our trust in Him. He wants us to rely on His strength to get us through.

Joshua 1:5-9 says, “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

That is God’s promise to us. He is with us wherever we go. In this portion of scripture God tells Joshua three different times to “be strong and of good courage.” God understood the task ahead. He knew the obstacles and battles Joshua would face. He knew that there were giants in the land. But He also knew that Joshua would win. God knows the final outcome.

Trust in Him, wait on His timing, be strong and of good courage and start “Walking in Your Calling” today!
