Top Ten

Hello everyone. Since I wasn’t going to be available today to write this week’s column (I’m at the Victory Outreach International Men’s Conference in San Antonio, Texas.), I decided to try a little something different. I’ve compiled a list of my top ten favorite songs of all time. My list includes songs that have ministered to me over the years and have left an impact on my life. (The list doesn’t include songs I’ve written, or they’d probably all be geno songs, ha.) I wrote a brief description of why I chose each particular song and I hope you enjoy. God Bless.

10. Whole Again – Jennifer Knapp. This song captures our relationship with God perfectly. He is the faithful Father that always has room on His knee for us. We are the children that can always come running back to Him no matter what mistakes or failures we make. “If I give my life, if I lay it down, can you turn this life around, around, can I be made clean by this offering, of my soul, can I be made whole again.”

9. Worlds Apart – Jars of Clay. “Take my world apart, I am on my knees. Take my world apart, broken on my knees.” I love the intensity of this song. God’s love for us is indescribable. “Did you really have to die for me? All I am for all You are is what I need and what I believe are worlds apart.” This song has such a deep meaning. God, take my world apart. I give it all up to you. “I look beyond the empty cross forgetting what my life has cost…”

8. Lay It Down - Jaci Valesquez. Jaci’s always been one of my favorite vocalists. “All of my hopes and my dreams and my best laid plans, are slowing slipping through my folded hands. So I’m going to lay it down. I’m going to learn to trust you now…” I love those lyrics. When things are fading the best thing we can do is pray and trust God.

7. To Know You – Nichole Nordeman. “And I, I really want to know You, I want to make each day a different way that I can show You, how I really want to love You, be patient with my doubt, I’m just trying to figure out, Your will, and I really want to know You still.” I remember getting a free tape with two songs on it from a Christian bookstore a long time ago and this was one of those songs on it. Knowing God requires faith and sometimes we do tend to doubt Him. God, help my unbelief. Even though we may have our Doubting Thomas moments, God is real and we can trust in Him.

6. Love Song – Third Day. “Just to be with you, I’ll do anything, there’s no price I wouldn’t pay and just to be with you I would give everything, I would give my life away.” Christ went to the cross and died to be with us. This song ministers so deeply to me because it shows the full extent of God’s grace. He loved me so much that He died for me. He’d do anything He could just to be with me. Wow.

5. Trading My Sorrows – Darrell Evans. This is one of those songs that allowed me to break through and worship God freely. I have always struggled with who I am. I grew up insecure with who I was because of my back and being shy when I was younger. It was at a worship concert that God told me to trade in all that I was to Him and say YES to Him and that’s when my desire to worship Him started to grow. “I’m trading my sorrows. I’m trading my shame. I’m laying them down for the joy of the Lord. I’m trading my sickness. I’m trading my pain. I’m laying them down for the joy of the Lord.”

4. Wrap Me In Your Arms – Michael Gungor. I’m a worshiper at heart so you can see that many of these song selections are worship songs. This is one of those songs that you can just get lost in God’s presence. “Take me to that place Lord, to that secret place Lord, where I can be with You…”

3. Stormz – CRS. Just to let you know, this is not a PHF promotion, and I can use this song in my list because I didn’t write it, ha. I was going through so many trials around the time this song came about. Chris wrote this song the night before we were going to the studio and I told him to wait on recording it because I hadn’t even heard the song yet. But he insisted and I finally caved in and said let’s give it a try. As he put down the verses, tears began flooding my eyes in the studio because it was everything I was going through. “Pain, tears are falling down my face, I really don’t have the strength, this life I live makes me think, there’s no way out...”

2. Everything – Lifehouse. One word describes this song, Powerful! I had always loved this song, but it wasn’t until I saw a skit on YouTube (search Lifehouse Everything skit), that it was pushed up to number 2 on my top ten list. “You’re all I want, You’re all I need, You’re everything…” Nothing says it better in worship. “How can I stand here with You and not be moved by You? Would you tell me how it could be any better than this?” When you’re in God’s presence, you can’t help but be changed.

1. Heart of Worship – Matt Redman. I had been at a point where I had run away from God’s calling in my life. I had taken my eyes off God and started messing up. I remember hearing this song in a Friday night worship service while I was in college. The words broke me. “I’m coming back to the heart of worship, and it’s all about You, it’s all about You Jesus, I’m sorry Lord for the thing I’ve made it, when it’s all about You, it’s all about You Jesus.”

There are probably a few songs I forgot or left out and maybe deserved to be in the top ten, but all these songs above have meant a lot to me throughout the years. If you get a chance, check them out. I pray you have an awesome week and I’ll be back with a regular column next week.

w/muchluv,
