You Can!!
Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford
I’m blessed to have been born to parents that always encouraged me to follow my dreams. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my family. I don’t take that for granted. Many don’t have that support system growing up. There are a lot of dreams that have been shattered because no one encouraged them to go for it.
I was watching a movie on TV the other day about a young boy who dreamed of playing professional soccer. This kid was amazing and had the skills and talents to make it big, but his father was always putting him down and calling his dream nothing but a fantasy. His dream could have been crushed and he could have ended up just another worker in his father’s small business, which there is nothing wrong with that, but he was destined for something greater. He believed in his dream and didn’t let anyone hold him back and he reached his dream by playing for a pro team.
I really like the quote I started the column with this week. I read it in the paper awhile back and jotted it down on a post-it note and put it in my folder in my backpack so I wouldn’t forget it. It really is true. If you think you can do something, you will try to accomplish that goal. If you don’t think you can do it, then you will never try. Whatever you set your mind to do, with God’s help, you will be able to do.
Jesus put it this way in Mark 10:27, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”
My parents never discouraged me from following my dreams, even if they knew some of them were impossible. Like the soccer player, I had dreams of playing professional basketball. Of course that dream never came true, but at one point in my life I truly believed that I could make it if I put all my heart and energy into it. God had other plans of course and He instilled other dreams in my heart. I always wanted to write for Him and do music for Him. Today that is exactly what I’m doing. I’m blessed to be able to write this column every week and also work with an awesome group of artists at our PHF Productions record label.
If you look up the word belief in the dictionary, it is defined as a conviction that certain things are true. We need to develop a way of thinking made of beliefs that support the dreams we want to obtain in our lives. What do you want to do with your life? Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? Fifteen years? What has God called you to do? We all aspire towards something in life. We all have a destiny, a purpose, a calling.
In His time here on earth, Jesus constantly told His followers to believe and to have faith. He was always trying to get them to believe in the impossible. If I was Jesus I would have been like, “Hey dummy, don’t you get it, I’m God, Just Believe Already!” Ha, but He had a way of getting His point across.
In John 11:40 Jesus says to a doubting Martha right before He brings Lazarus back from the dead, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
In Matthew 8:26 Jesus tells His frightened disciples right before He calms the storm, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”
In Matthew 14:31 Jesus tells Peter when he started sinking after taking His eyes of Jesus while walking on water, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Jesus says in John 14:12, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
I still think that is a wild statement. Jesus said we will do greater works than He did. Wow! If you only believe, you will be able to do just that. Why not? There is nothing holding us back. God has given each of us a desire for something, a task to complete, a mission to accomplish. He has burned something in your heart and He wants you to become all you’ve been called to be.
One of my favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Another is Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
You really can do the impossible. You really can become all that God’s called you to be. You really can finish school. You really can achieve that desire within your heart. You really can become that preacher, teacher, doctor, lawyer, baseball player, missionary or whatever it is God’s put in your heart to become. This week I’ll leave you with these two words, “You Can!!”
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”
