Shine
This world is getting darker. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but everywhere I look sin abounds. I can’t believe some of the things I read in the paper or see on the TV. Our economy is looking bleak and people’s outlook on life has started to shift. Fear and dread are spreading, or at least concern where our country and our world is headed. At a time when people’s hearts are growing cold, the world is growing darker and the future is uncertain, our job as Christians is to “Shine.”
Our nation, our world, is at a turning point. Economies around the globe are falling apart. It’s scary to think that we could be headed into a depression. Jobs are being cut and unemployment is going up. The world is becoming a scarier place. Beyond all that though, it is also becoming a great time to be a Christian. How can I say that? I truly believe that God is on the verge of doing something great, beyond anything we could ever imagine. He’s going to bring forth a revival that is going to shake the entire world.
As times get darker, people are going to be drawn to the light and there is going to be an explosion of the Gospel like never before. His Word is going to reach every last corner of the Earth. When things are falling apart everywhere else, the world is going to look at us as Christians and wonder why we aren’t freaking out. They are going to question why we still have joy amidst all the turmoil. And our testimony is going to “Shine” so bright that many will turn to God because of it. So I’m not scared of the future, no matter how hopeless it may look. My God has always been there for me, provided for me and took care of me. My trust is not in the government, the next president, my job or anything else in this world. I rely on Christ alone, so I know that no matter what will come my way, I’ll be safe in His arms.
Many of you know that I sleep during the day because I work the night shift at my job. I keep my room at my apartment pitch dark because of this. I even put up a black tarp over my window so I can pretend like its night time, ha. The other day I woke up and a thumb tack fell off my tarp leaving a ray of light shining right on my face from the window. That little bit of light made it hard for me to get back to sleep. It really did light up the whole room.
Light always pierces the darkness. The darker it is, the brighter the light shines through it. I know times are tough. Here in Houston we just went through a hurricane and darkness literally came over our city as the electricity went out across the town. If it wasn’t for our flashlights, candles and the glow of our cell phones (before our batteries died, ha), we wouldn’t have been able to see our way through the blackout.
God is looking for some flashlights, some candles, some cell phone screens during this dark time to “Shine”. What a great opportunity we have to tell people about Jesus. When everything is crashing down all around, God’s people will be left standing and we’ll be able to show the world that it is because of God that we are able to.
I was helping my sister rearrange her room the other day and I had forgotten that she loves to collect lighthouses. When there’s a storm out at sea, the ship looks towards the lighthouse to direct its path. Without that light to lead it to shore, the ship could get lost at sea. Without that light to tell it that it’s nearing shore, the ship could crash into a rock or into land.
God has called us to be lighthouses to this world. Our light should lead the sinner to salvation. It should show the lost the way to Jesus. It should keep people from crashing and wasting their lives. During these storms and this dark time that we’re living in, let’s be who God’s called us to be. This is truly our time to “Shine.”
